Funny Story

I attend a Calvary Chapel.  Calvary’s are a non-denominational church but there are about 500 of them nation wide.  Anyway, the Calvary Chapel I attend has started a ministry called Salt and Light where folks make a commitment to read through the bible, at their own pace, and write down each day what God revealed to them.  They also commit to memorize one verse (of their own choosing) each week.  Folks then gather in small groups and share a little about what they learned that week.

I have been helping out with getting the ministry set up and getting all the groups going.  Each group has a leader but when a group meets for the first time, I come to the group and give everyone an intro to how the group works, answer questions, etc. Today we started a new Salt & Light group so off I went to see my friend Flor (the group leader) and the new group members.

Flor lives in the coolest place ever.  Not far from here, sticking out into Lake Eustis, is an area called Grand Island and on “the island” there is a Baptist retreat center called Lake Yale.  It is beautiful out there (gorgeous lake views, old oak trees, great breezes, etc) and the center lets folks from all denominations rent their facilities, have retreats, etc.  Flor’s husband works for the retreat center so… they get to live on the grounds.

So…off I go… looking foward to seeing another Salt & Light group getting started.  I pull in and on the sign in front of me it says “Calvary Chapel” and an arrow pointing to the left.  I immediately am just so impressed with Flor and can’t believe she thought to do that.  I follow the arrow and wind round and round through the property.  I think I went the wrong way, I come back and check the sign again. Rinse and repeat 3 times.

For reasons I cannot explain, I continued to do this for 20 minutes instead of just picking up the phone and asking for directions.  I just figured I missed her house number and I could just figure it out.  Finally, I gave up and called Flor.  I explained that I followed the Calvary Chapel arrow but I can’t find her house.

Flor, being Flor, just laughed and said ever so sweetly “that’s for some other Calvary Chapel.  I live in the complete opposite direction from that sign”.

And the moral of the story…. stop and ask for directions!!!!
