Women’s Christmas Dinner

Tonight I loaded AG up and we headed to church.  A dinner was being held for the women in the church.  There’s a man in our congregation who is a professional chef and so he planned the menu and did the cooking.  I had a nice time and quite tasty.  I almost geeked a hundred times on this dinner but, in the end, I’m very glad I went.

There was childcare for Anna Grace and she did well for a while. But, as it got late she melted down and wanted her mom.  She tactfully had this meltdown coincide with the end of the dinner so I didn’t miss much.

One of the women from my church rode along with us.  It was a lady that I don’t know very well but I’m glad that we rode together.  We just chatted the whole way.  It was so nice to talk to someone from church about anything that wasn’t about my house, my husband’s new job, etc.  The time at church is often difficult because I want a break from such things, I want to focus on other things but the questions always drag me back into staring at my circumstances.  I know everyone means well.  But… today I was just praying that I could spend some time with someone this evening talking about anything else.

I was so surprised when that person turned out to be this lady from church.  Since we don’t know each other well we’d have to make small talk.  And… to make small talk… most people just ask me about the house, and Dana’s job, etc.  I don’t think she even brought it up.  If she did, she didn’t focus on it.

I’m so glad we rode together.

So.. the lesson for me is not to be so surprised at such things and to reach out to others more.  If I hadn’t approached this woman about riding together 2 weeks ago it may not have happened.  The lesson for y’all… If you know someone in your church or neighborhood who has circumstances similar to mine… Talk to them.  But sometimes, try to talk to them about anything but their circumstances.  They may enjoy the brief escape.
