Wednesday is for Works in Progress

Thursday edition (she says sheepishly).

Work in Progress: Five in a Row

We’re having a pretty good time with our Five in a Row afternoon projects.  This week we’re working on Harold and the Purple Crayon.  I loved this book when I was a kid so I am having a lot of fun seeing Anna Grace enjoy it as well.

One of our projects involved getting a big long piece of paper (like a 6 footer) and a purple crayon.  Anna Grace pretended she was Harold and drew whatever came to mind: dragonflies, houses, a dog house, etc.  She had a pretty good time.

Work in Progress: Get Out More via Letterboxing

Last week we loaded Joshua into the car and headed up to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park a.k.a. Cross Creek.  If you’ver read the Yearling or seen the movie….well this is where that story was written.  The area is beautiful.

(As a side note…. we also took a side trip to Burrito Brothers in Gainesville.  I hadn’t been there in years.  Soooo good!)

There are 2 letterboxes at the state park.  We found one of them but couldn’t find the other.

Here’s some pictures from our trip:

House at Cross Creek

This house is built in what Floridians recognize as “the cracker style”.  The roof is pitched high to draw up heat, there’s a crawl space underneath to allow for air circulation and front and back porches for cross breezes.  These houses stay a bunch cooler than other houses do in the land of heat and humidity.

The Writing Table

Originally built for poker by her first husband, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings decided to put this table on her front porch and use it for her writing table.

Work In Progress: Geocaching

I thought since we like letterboxing, we could also try geocaching.  We made a few attempts, found one.  I think I like letterboxing more and I also think it is easier to have Anna Grace involved in the finding of the letterbox than the finding of the geocache.  Not saying we won’t still geocache, but I think we’ll spend more time letterboxing.

Work in Progress: Auburn Camp Shirt

The front is growing… slowly.  I just haven’t had much time to knit lately so projects are dragging out.  Must. Rectify. This. Soon.

Haven’t touched them

Work in Progress: Carding

I have created about 10 batts and today is the day I  pull my “Tom Sawyer” stunt.  I am teaching a group of girls how to spin and I’m taking the carder.   Gonna talk about how fun it is to card…. offer them a chance to card wool… blah blah blah.

(insert maniacal laugh here)

Work in Progress: Teaching a bunch of pre-teen girls how to spin

Dana made me 13 spindles using the instructions found all over the net for making uber cheap spindles.  (Hey locals, see those discs?   Those are the leftovers of the video Lisa and I made for the Childrens ministry’s Christmas music.  Also known as….destroying the evidence!)   I have one that I will use to show them how to attach a lead but in the interest of not totally frustrating them and instantly turning them off to spinning…. I got the other spindles started for them.  Figure I’ll show them how fun it is to spin before I aggravate them to no end showing them how frustrating it is to start that first little bit.

6 Spindles Ready, 6 More to Go

I’m teaching this little “class” this morning so I’ll let ya know how it goes.   This is the same group that I taught how to knit and they are a pretty good bunch of girls so I think a good time will be had by all.  :-)

Work in Progress: Football

Or… trying to be gracious toward other football teams; FSU-enemy football teams. This isn’t working out well.  A certain Florida based team is going to the national championship this week and I have just one thing to say:  Go Sooners!

  1. You have an awful lot of works in progress…I don’t think that I could keep up with so many! I can see where you might not have much time to knit, though. I hope your class goes well. =)
