As one who is always fascinated by those Topsy Turvy planters, while also being too cheap to buy one, I had to find another way. And I did…I made my own.
We took 2 pots that we already had, cut a hole in the bottom and bada bing…..upside down tomatoes.
Anna Grace’s play set is perfect for hanging the things up and she already had 2 open spots. Perfect!
Seeds have been planted that, once they sprout, will be planted in the top of the pots. This will provide us with fresh herbs while also attracting ladybugs….ladybugs who like to eat the little bugs that like to eat tomato plants. I’m making an attempt to grow these organically but we’ll see. Florida is filled with bazillions of bugs…all of which have an appetite for tomatoes. Hanging them upside down results in better air flow and that alone decreases some bug attacks. Not all…but some.
Fingers crossed!!!
Dana hangs up the tomatoes.
She who likes to climb ladders just HAAAAD to check things out.
Current water plan: Fill water jug, climb ladder into playhouse, lean out window.
Anna Grace is having a blast with this. She loves to look after them and it is giving us a chance to teach her a little bit about seeds/plants/veggies, etc.
Currently the tomatoes are doing well, they have turned up toward the sun just a little and have some new blossoms.
Stay tuned….
OMG! You are a genius. I am sending your blog link to my mother so that she can try that up here in Maine once the snow is gone. I look forward to your updates on the plants progress.
I’m so jealous right now. We can’t plant tomatoes until the end of May, if we’re lucky. Sending “grow, ‘maters, grow” vibes your way!
I love that you made them yourself. I have to ask though, what is the benefit of growing them upside down?
I have been wanting to do the same thing for a couple of years now. Did you get your idea from the Family Fun magazine? It was on their website awhile ago and I’ve saved it to try. We’ve tried to grow them in the back yard but I never get any ripe ones to eat. I’ve gotten a few green ones but they get eaten out before I get one for myself. Yes we are quite buggy here in fl.
How cool! I can’t wait to see how the tomato plants do. What herbs are you planting that will attract ladybugs. One of my tomato sprouts has already bit the dust.
