Tuesday is Hug Your Neurologist Day

Anna Grace was evaluated by a pediatric neurologist today.  I had concerns because, well, neurologists are not necessarily known for their winning personality or their charming bedside manner.  This neurologist, however, was great.  Easy to talk to, great with kids.

The outcome…. Anna Grace has apraxia of speech , dyspraxia a.k.a. motor apraxia , sensory integration issues and she may have a mild form of aphasia.   While that may sound like a scary scenario for us it is not.  She is greatly improving hour by hour, day by day.  Dr. Glass feels that AG will likely have many of her issues resolved by the time she gets to be about 5 and that cognitively she is at age level.  And…. the best part is this.  The neurologist told us that in no uncertain terms, Anna Grace CANNOT be diagnosed with autism and she IS NOT on the autism spectrum.

I have fought this battle since she was 15 months old.  I didn’t think the diagnosis was accurate but I was treated like a mother in denial, a moron or both.  No longer.  I am now a mother who is educated, understands her child’s diagnosis and has a neurologist’s notes to back me up.  I feel like the weight of the world is off of my shoulders.  Dr. Glass prepared me that folks who lack adequate training, etc.  may still try to pigeon hole her into that diagnosis but that I should stand my ground.

So today (for us anyway) is Hug Your Neurologist Day…. or Tears of Joy Day….or Dance in the Street Day…. take your pick!

  2. This day is going to go on your calendar to celebrate every year! Good news on A.G. and Jeff Bowden resigns. Can it get any better? I’m so happy for you about the news on Anna Grace. I think I’d have that neurologist’s report laminated, so you can carry it with you to every school conference.

  3. That is just wonderful news to hear! It took me until about the age of 4 to learn how to speak so I’m sure my own Mother could relate to you and your daughter. But geez now I work in media and talk a bit too much, so it all works out in the end!
