Priceless Moment with Anna Grace

My little Anna Grace is turning 4 this weekend and she has demanded politely requested a party. So… I told her she had to help plan it. She let me know what color cupcakes (blue), that she wanted balloons (pretty balloons to be exact) and a playground. The playground thing is being “fudged”. I rented one of those big blowup things.

So… we are having a small and barely planned birthday party. I think she’ll have a ball.

Today we went to Super Target to get the food for the party. We’re standing in line and little miss is jammerin’ on about this, that and this other. Non-stop talking. Loud talking.

In front of us is a very attractive lady, attractive in the classy sense. So classy that she was likely completely unaware that her bright turquoise thong was visible. Very visible. The lady is probably 5 to 6 years older than I am and while I would consider her dressed up, she probably thought these were her slumming clothes. She had on a Chico’s sundress that probably ran her about 250 bucks and a 400 dollar pair of high heeled Jimmy Choo sandals. And this was her grocery shopping attire.

I marveled at this while standing there in my drawstring exercise pants that are never used for exercise and my big blue shirt with the stain on the front. Purdy.

Anna Grace was fascinated by the woman. Although I try not to encourage the whole “princess” thing, it happened in spite of my best efforts. One manifestation of this is that if you are dressed up, Anna Grace says you are a princess.

So, Anna Grace is going on and on about how the lady is a princess. She looks like a princess. She surely is a princess, etc. The lady is essentially ignoring her and I’m trying to get her to lower her voice, settle down, etc. Anna Grace would not be detered.

She starts moving closer to the lady, closer but not too close, saying the princess stuff even louder. At this point the lady said something. Now her tone was not rude, just what she said. So, I was shocked that Anna Grace picked up on it.

The lady looks at me and says “she’s not going to touch me is she?”

I said nothing but tried to get Anna Grace to stand closer to me. At which point Anna Grace announces… at the top of her voice….

“She looks like a princess. But she doesn’t act like one”.
