I told Dana about the very large animals we saw alongside the road. Based on the fact that I told him they had bulbous noses ,not pointy noses, he believes I likely saw moose. (Or, as I like to call them, when referring to more than one, Mooses.)
The other clue was the lack of horns. My mother reminded me that SF had a mounted set of moose horns (in my family these are affectionately referred to as "the moose ears"). He obtained these horns not through hunting but because he found them in a field or something while living in Canada. According to SF (who liked to tell tall tales so take this with a grain of salt) moose ( Mooses) shed their horns each year so the hornless large animals with bulbous noses and floppy ears were likely moose ( mooses) that had shed their horns.
Way cool! Would’ve been way more cool if I had had my camera!!!!!
On another note…. a big box arrived at the door today. What was inside? Seacoast Handpainted Yarns for the shop. I’m getting them listed as fast as I can.
From what I understand, the moose cow has no rack.
I really like that sentence.
is that ‘moose’ or ‘meese’?? hahahaha…that sounded fabulous..I can just imagine what they looked like and how large they were. You know, I went to Alaska twice and didn’t see not more moose! For some reason I didn’t think there is any moose in WA…HA- maybe there are more there than AK!
Mooses don’t shed their racks yearly, they keep them for life altho they can be shed/broken due to injury. I think it takes male Mooses a full year to start to develop their antlers so you either saw juvenile Mooses or female Mooses.
Listen Kris, if FPS isn’t fun, just stop knitting it. Kniting should be fun, not a chore! And honestly, I am this close to giving up on mine too! I am a 2 project knitter and I don’t have UFO’s yet my FPS has been untouched since at least a month ago! Granted, I had some gift knitting to finish up but still, I don’t feel the love…I’m giving it one more chance tonight and if I still feel the way I do now, I’m done!! I am gonna use some new addi lace needles to see if that makes a difference but I’m not holding my breath!Part of my issue is I HATE knitting with laceweight!!
And neither of us are “quitters” – we can both do it, it’s just not a knit that thrills us anymore!
It will be sad to rip out what I’ve done so I might do a blog contest to give it away as is, to someone who wants to knit their own FPS….so darlin’ you gotta know when to fold em if you’re not happy!!!
I prefer Mise to Mooses, but I think the plural is still Moose (like “a sheep: or “some sheep” or “look at those sheep, there must be a yarn store nearby”).
The female “cow” and its babies do not have antlers. They roam around our mountain cabin and are notoriously stupid with cars. You can never guess where they are going to run, they often change direction and end up in front of your car. Because they are so tall when they are hit by a car they fall at the knees onto the car and can crush the driver. Each summer in Maine the news reports on a few people who are killed this way.
You’re lucky you got to see some Mise. I go on Mise/Moose/Mooses/Mises hunts ever summer with my camera. They’re best tracked down at dusk when they emerge from the woods to graze near swampy ponds.
So there you go, more moose information that you could ever want!
