Project 2,996 : honoring the victims of September 11, 2001

This post is in honor of Laurence Nedell.

Laurence Nedell was 52 years old on the day of the attacks.  He worked for Aon Corporation in Tower 2 as a Risk Management Specialist.  When the first plane hit, Larry called his wife to let her know he was okay.  He was in a meeting on the 101st floor and was leaving the building.  Mr. Nedell was last seen on the 92nd floor of Tower 2 as he decided to go back to make sure an older, visually impaired coworker was okay.  That coworker survived the attacks but Mr. Nedell did not.

Mr. Nedell was born in Maspeth, Queens and was a graduate of Queensborough and Queens College.  Larry lived in Lindenhurst, New York.  He was an animal lover, enjoyed science fiction/action movies and spending time with his family.  He collected teeth of the Megladon Shark and had recently started a pocket knife collection.

Larry Nedell was married for 30 years to Lorraine and had two daughters, Laura and Jennie. In the days following the attacks, his daughters spent hours searching for him and posting flyers.  One flyer stated "Laurence Nedell is 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds.  He was last seen on the 92nd floor.  His blood type is AB negative".  Because Larry had a habit of  keeping his wallet in his desk drawer, his family knew he probably didn’t have it when he tried to evacuate the building.  Early on this gave them some hope that maybe he was alive but just didn’t have any identification.

Larry Nedell is survived by his wife Lorraine, his daughters Laura and Jennie, his godson Kyle and his three dogs.

  2. I am the daughter of Larry Nedell and wanted to thank you for this tribute. Thank you for keeping his memory alive. I only wish all that viewed this knew just what an amazing man he was.He is and always will be my hero. I strive each day to be at least a quarter of the person he was. He is gone but NEVER forgotten-Thank you again

  3. I think of Larry often. We met when Larry worked on Wall St. for Allianz and I was there on business from the home office in Los Angeles. Such a friendly guy…so tragic.
