FROG!

When the yarn and the pattern rebel…..or…. when the knitter refuses to face the facts.

Everyone says that if you use a varigated yarn for a lace shawl that you won’t be able to see the stitches.

Everyone says that if you use a varigated yarn for lace you could get some odd patterning.

I. Would. Not. Listen.

(Sorry about using the flash…. had lighting issues)

This is one skein of Panda Sock Yarn from Sea Coast Handpainted.  I thought this would make a lovely Flower Basket Shawl.  Originally I was going to use Misti Lace.  But… I saw those colors and I couldn’t resist.  They looked all Flower Basket-ish and I thought it would be perfect.

Then I cast on the shaw and went through the first chart.  Can ya see the flower bastkets?  NOOOOOO!  I now admit what everyone else tried to tell me…a varigated yarn does not work when knitting a detailed lace pattern. I’ve learned my lesson.  Pinky swear.

Back to the (solid color) Misti Lace….. a.k.a. "Plan A".

But I love this Panda Sock.  What to do…. what to do.  Since I love this yarn, and these colors, I’m looking for a new project where it will be a much better fit.

Learned. My. Lesson!

  1. I hear ‘ya. I’ve made the mistake of using a variegated yarn to use for the Doctor’s Bag in Knit 2 Together, and combining a herringbone pattern with variegated yarn…yep, you guessed it. The pattern is essentially lost. While I haven’t done much of the bag, at the same time, I’ve done enough not to want to frog it, so I’ll just have to persevere, when I get back to that project again. :-S

  2. Actually I like the yarn with the pattern…I think once blocked it would show just fine. You can swatch a few pattern repeats and block it and see what you think.

  3. Hi! Just de-lurking to offer up a little suggestion here. I am making the Feathery Lace Stole (I think that’s what it’s called!) from the book Exquisite Little Knits. I love the pattern, it’s very simple and I think it would showcase a variegated yarn nicely. That said, however, not sure if because it’s a rectangular wrap if it would be subject to pooling. Anyway, my two cents! Here’s a couple of photos of mine.
