Two finished items (sorta!). First, I finished up spinning the Merino/Bamboo roving. This is a roving from Yarn Love and it was a test of my spinning skills as the bamboo needs a bit more skill than I currently possess.
Roving started out looking like this….
And finished like this.
I haven’t knit much using my own handspun but I am thinking about making a very basic pair of socks from this. I’ll have to learn the toe-up method to make sure I don’t run out of yarn but I’ve been wanting to do that anyway.
And now for finished item #2….socks for my freakishly long feet (no…not a photo with a perspective problem….my feet are actually that weird looking).

This is a free pattern I found linked on Ravelry and it was a pretty fun knit. I knit these doing the 2 socks on 2 circs method. Modifications: short row heels. One sock has a Japanese short row (way to fiddle-y…won’t be doing that again on a sock project) and the other has a garter stitch short row heel. I liked this method better but I have decided that I need at least a little bit of a heel flap otherwise my sock doesn’t fit that great.
The goal in doing the short row heels was that trying to do the heel flap and gusset stitch pick up was too fiddle-y while knitting socks on a circular needle. But both short row heels did require lots of fiddling and redneck engineering. So I’m not convinced that I’m coming out ahead. But I do like the look of the short row heels.
Must think about this some more.
That is a very pretty colorway. I really need to learn to spin, seems like all the cool kids are doing it so there must be something to it. Now if I can just convince the DH I “need” a wheel.
I love the roving/spinning/home-made yarn.
What size shoes do you wear? o.0
Cute socks! I think what Marguerite (Stitches of Violet) does is add a third circ when she gets to the heel. That way you can divide the heel stitches in half while picking up the gusset stitches, allowing you more “give” to get around the corners. Once the gusset stitches are decreased away, you can go back to two circs. I’m to the flap on a pair and am going to give this a try.
Gorgeous handspun – and great socsk too!
I love the look of short-row heels, and I’ve actually done one pair of socks with them. But my godzilla sized feet fit better into socks with a flap heel and gusset construction. And my feet are size 10.5 (11 in some shoes), do you have me beat?
