Dungeness Spit

New Vocabulary…. Spit is apparently a Pacific Northwest term for sandbar.

The Dungeness Spit is a cool hike along the Strait of Juan de Fuca that leads to a 5 mile sandbar covered in driftwood.  We didn’t hike all the way to the end but we did go as far as to get down onto the beach.  It was nearing sunset and quite pretty.  Accross the water we could see the faint outlines of Vancouver Island.  Apparently when it is clear you can get a great view of the island.

If you look along the shoreline toward the top right of the photo, you’ll see where it looks like the shore is curving in toward the water.  That is actually the beginning of the spit (sandbar).

While walking along the Strait of Juan de Fuca I was left with a question.  Who was Juan de Fuca and why did he get a body of water named after him?
