Dragging Myself Through a Sea of Ugliness (or How I Got My Knitting Mojo Back?)

I frogged the scarf last night and made some attempts at restarting.  I tried a mistake rib pattern.  That looked awful so I frogged it again.  Then I tried garter stitch….nope!… a  3 x3 rib…nope!…. a 4 x 4 rib…. nope! and then a 5 X 2 rib….. still nope!

With the thing frogged for the hundreth time I went back to basic stockinette.  I did a garter stitch edge to prevent curling but apparently it wasn’t enough for the weight of the yarn.  It is curling anyway along the sides.  The bottom has about 2.5 inches of garter stitch so no curling there.

All day I have wondered what my issue is with this.  I finally figured out that with the differing weight of the yarn and then the colors not looking quite right that the thing looks homemade.  That started an internal debate of whether that is a good thing or not.  I mean we all consider giving someone one of our handknits a special thing so what’s the big deal???!!!!  I came to the conclusion that hand made is great, home made … not so great.

I’ve also discovered that much of my problem with the colors has to do with the lighting.  In this house the yarn looks like it is teel and maroon and a dirty yellow.  Under the right light you see more blues and such.  But, I can’t always guarantee I’ll be standing in just the right light when wearing the thing!

Here’s the finished product.  I don’t know how long it is but I’m 5′ 10.5 inches tall as a reference.

This yarn goes from fat to thin and back again.  I used size 15 needles.  It’s warm.  It’s fluffy.  It sure is ugly.  But I’ve been so cold lately I just may be frozen enough to wear the darned thing.

Having a finished object has me inspired.  I’m thinking about actually stitching up Eris.  (mind you… all that has to be stiched on that thing is the sleeves.  What is my problem!!!!!)  I’m eyeing the yarn that I bought for the knitpicks Telemark sweater.  And then there’s sock yarn.  I still have lots and lots of sock yarn.  But the Blue Heron laceweight seems to be beckoning as well.  Now I can’t make a decision.

Yep.  I think I’ve got my mojo back.

  1. I like it…it reminds me of those trendy unkempt scarves that all the teenagers are wearing! Keep up the good work. I haven’t learned anything but the basic knit stitch myself!
