We go to church in Puyallup, about 20 minutes from where we live. Also in Puyallup is a huge fair, the Puyallup Fair, and it’s that time of year again. So we decided to take a risk. Anna Grace would skip her nap, we’d eat lots of junk food and we’d Do the Puyallup. Thankfully, Anna Grace extended us some mercy and this went really well. We had a great time.
There were animals…..
There were knitters, knitting, spinners and spinning….
I went to the pavillion to see all the knitting entries and spinning
entries. Recently Betsy (a blog reader and one of the first folks I
met in Washington) had emailed me stating that she just decided to go
for it and put some entries in the fair. Of course I searched all the
cabinets until I found her entries. One of them had a beautiful blue
ribbon attached. Way to go, Betsy! Betsy spun the fiber and knit the hat… I think she designed the hat too.
There were lots of spinners in various places. Some were selling yarn, roving, etc and others were spinning in where the sheep were. I did make a purchase. I bought some mohair to spin. It’s a nice blue color. I’m looking forward to giving this a try.
There were rides and junk food….
Anna Grace enjoyed riding the carousel and the two of us went down one of those big tall slides. We rode together. You know the kind… where it’s like way up in the air and you slide down on a blanket/carpet thing. AG giggled the whole time. Anna Grace also went on a little toddler ride by herself. This was a first for the big girl.
Anna Grace ate the dum dum lollipops I brought with me and then graduated to this….
I ate an insane amount of peanut brittle (YUM!). There were so many fat grams consumed during this little adventure that it should be illegal.
There were veggies…. really big veggies….
"It’s the great pumpkin, Charlie Brown".
Not this pumpkin but in another pavillion we saw the champion pumpkin weighing in a little over 1000 lbs. I have never seen a 1000 lb veggie. It is a bit jaw dropping.
Finally… there was a very tired toddler….
who fell asleep on the shuttle bus
and remained asleep while being put in the car. And all toddlers will be proud to know that she stuck by The Toddler Manifesto. She never let go of her lollipop.
You can do it at a trot
You can do it at a gallop
You can do it real slow
So your heart won’t pali-patate.
Just don’t be late.
Do the Puyallup!
I sure miss those old commercials. They keep coming up with a new “snazzy” motto every year, but this is the one that I remember best.
I love the picture of sleepy Anna Grace. I have a similar picture of Punkin when she was about 2. She fell asleep with her fork halfway to her mouth. First I took a picture; then I made her comfortable . Poor dear–after a week of family reunioning, her little body had just had enough! Halfway through a bite.
Sounds like a good time was had by all. We did the Evergreen State Fair, so I’m not sure if we will do the Puyallup this year.
Way to go, AG! Our girls were known for crashing at the dinner table (always on spaghetti night!) and sleeping the whole night. We have plenty of pictures for blackmailing them as they age. ;O)
OMG!!! I used to live in Seattle (’75-’86) and we’d “Doodah Puyallup!” every year. I’d always milk the goat (raised money for something, can’t remember what) and coo at all the animals. But mainly I’d just eat my way through the whole event. Do they still do the scones? Elephant Ears? Onion burgers? Oyster stew? Can you still buy a pearl oyster? I have all my Puyallup pearls in a little box to this day.
thank you… OMG… I’m sitting at my desk bauling… I got a blue ribbon… one dream realized…
Next year I go for TWO…
thank you so much Chris… I was going to have to wait until next week to find out if I even got displayed. I can’t believe it.
thank you thank you thank you…
I’ve got to run and get a tissue… I’m such a nerd!

I’m calming down… the hat is spun from dog hair. It wasn’t really designed… I was so anxious to see what it looked like that the minute I had it spun I just started knitting. I’ve made several tams… so eventhough I couldn’t find the book (recent move) I just plowed right through it and it came out perfectly in about two evening… it has to right really to a blue ribbon, I should have slaved away for months to get a blue ribbon.
It is a very pretty hat though. The fiber is all fuzzy like rabbit.
I’ve been dreaming of putting an entry in the fair for years… I finally did it. I can’t seem to stop crying… (big baby)

I love the picture with the lollypop. My just shy of 3 year old son did the same thing with a handful of Good & Plenty this past weekend. I unstrapped him from his seat to find a hand full of sticky and melted candy. Amazing how they do it.
We are so entering knitting into the fair next year. The real question is, did you eat an Elephant Ear? It’s not the fair without an elephant ear.
I’d better relish my blue ribbon… you guys are going to kick my butt all over the board at the fair next year.
I’m glad Lorette doesn’t spin.
