Sorry about that, I kinda dashed out on ya. I had to go to Tallahassee this weekend to help with packing up items out of my grandmother’s house. I was dreading this and now it is over so I feel all free and light. Woo Hoo.
Anyway, I thought I would be home earlier than I was (I didn’t get back until late Monday night…ugh!), I wasn’t prepared for the backlog of work, etc and thus, the blog had to be left silent.
Because I have so many little things to talk about, I should probably do a list. I’m not even sure I can manage that. Maybe an outline-ish list.
Item 1: Contest
So… first things, first. When we last did this little bloggy thing we had a little contest. And the winner is…. Cookie of Shut Up and Knit. So what does she win? Two skeins of ShibuiSock (which I just restocked last night. Look… pretty colors!).
Item 2: Spinning
I was trying to get into this mode of posting about spinning on Tuesdays. So… lets pretend that today is Tuesday.
Happy Tuesday to ya! (See… just play along and this will all work out just fine). Introducing…. Twisted Tuesdays. My lame effort to start spinning more often. I’m gonna post about it on Tuesdays (even the Tuesdays that are really Wednesdays).
When we last discussed the spinning, I was working on this wonderful stuff….
Blue Face Leicester roving from DragonFibers
Color: Big Top
Last week I finished the spinning and I gave it a little bath. Ever since then it has been hanging to dry. I seriously overspun the little thing because it has been wanting to twist back on itself something terrible. This overspinning (due to my newbie skills) was probably enhanced by the fact that I did just a 2 ply and not a three ply. (That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!)
Blue Face Leicester, 2 ply. Color: Big Top
I am still amazed at what my spinning looks like when compared to what the roving looked like. This happens every time I spin.
When I bought this roving I thought the yarn would have a pastel look, lots of blues, etc. Instead the predominant colors are reds and yellows. And I really like it. It just isn’t what I was expecting. I just don’t understand enough about how the colors blend at this point. I am always shocked. In a good way, I’ve never been disappointed. Just surprised.
Item 3: Knitting… as in teaching it.
Our church does this thing based on a verse out of Titus 2. The verse discusses the idea of the older women in the church teaching the younger women. So, Titus 2 nights were created and there is someone teaching things like sewing, making holiday cards, etc. Well, I was approached and asked to teach knitting, and I said sure.
So, the Titus 2 knitting night is this Friday and I’m so nervous I could die. That was trauma enough. But today this thought came in my head…
“the older women teach the younger”. The OLDER teach the YOUNGER.
In other words, 2 nights prior to my 40th birthday…. I will be standing there as an OLDER woman in the church. And the reality is…. its true. We go to a very young church and I am older than many of the women there.
But you really don’t want to ponder those things a few days prior to your 40th birthday.
Item 4: Heavy stuff
I am three pounds shy of my all time highest weight. Decided to do something about it. Right now I’d gnaw off my right arm for a piece of candy.
Item 5: Baby
Not that kind of Baby! Dream in Color Baby arrived and has been listed in the shop. The colors are amazing, the yarn is squishy soft. If you are newer to lace knitting, Baby would be a great choice. It is a bit thicker than other laceweights. It is actually closer to a lightweight sock yarn and some folks are actually making socks out of it.
Item 6: Where’s the Yarntini?
It was supposed to have been shipped at the beginning of last week so I, too, am wondering where it is.
Item 7: I have no item 7.
This must mean that I’m done. How was that for a very ADHD post?
Toodles Y’all and Carpe Llama!
Your yarn looks great to the untrained eye :-). I have a volunteer “older” person who will be an extra set of hands if you want one for Friday night. I’m convinced there is NOTHING she does not know how to do! Anyway, she volunteered to help if you want-just let me know. You are not “older” relative to most of us, but let’s face it…we’re all getting older relative to those youngins’ in the youth group :-).
Happy Birthday!
I was wondering about the “older women” thingy, too. You’ll do a great job with teaching.
Have you tried dried fruit in place of candy? Or tootsie rolls? They are low cal and I know how crazy one can get from lack of chocolate. ;^)
And thanks again!
I love the whole Titus 2 idea. What a great opportunity. I am sure you will do fantastic.
Your spinning looks great, I need to learn to spin sometime. And you are right about the colors of the yarn vs the fiber I had to read it twice to make sure I was reading about the right stuff.
Welcome back and have a great week
If it makes you feel any better–I also lead one of the Titus 2 sessions. There are plenty of women older than you!
I bought my yarn and needles today! I can’t wait. Do you think I can learn to knit a square washcloth in one night?
I took the “teaching knitting” class at Stitches in October. One little trick that the instructor taught us was to use the largest sized needles you can find and some very bulky yarn in a contrasting color (contrasting to the needles) for when you stand up in the front of the group and demonstrate. It really does make it easier for the group to see what you are doing. I’ve used that trick for a group of Boy Scout moms, and it really helps. Also, remember that some people are tactile learners. You might need to get behind them and put your arms around them and move the needles with their hands in yours so they get the feeling of the motion. Good luck with the class. And let me just say that if almost 40 is “older” then yikes, where am I at almost 50?!
We live in a community with lots of retirees. I think you have to be 70 to be considered “older”. =)
Happy Birthday!! It was really nice seeing you all yesterday. Also so happy that the Barbie house has found a home with Anna Grace!! Don’t get rid of it…I intend on giving it to my first granddaughter…I’ll plan on buying it back whenever you’re done with it!!!
