Just a quickie for G.
G is for….. Gator Hater (hey… do you think I could get away with using that for G and H?)
As an FSU fan I am of course NOT a fan of the University of Florida. While I’m still a devoted Gator Hater, the best Gator Hater days were during Steve Spurrier’s reign. Waiting for Spurrier to toss his visor, scream obscenities and see him turn beet red over nothing was half the fun of watching a UF game.
Now, with all this Gator Hater talk one would think that I am a graduate of FSU or some other school. But I have a dirty little secret.
I am a graduate of the University of Florida (as in The Gators). My masters degree is from UF but I wore my FSU t-shirts and such to class all the time. I was at an extension campus in Orlando. I wouldn’t have been so dumb if I was attending classes in Gainesville. Dana, being a huge Gator fan, hoped that by my attendance at UF I might change alliances. Not a chance!!!!
The rivalry between UF and FSU is huge. So huge in fact that we impose it on visitors, tourists, new residents, etc. When the weekend arrives for the gamegamegame, you must choose. Floridians do not accept answers such as "I don’t watch football", "I don’t get into such things", "I don’t have an opinion", etc. I don’t know how things are in the southern part of the state but in the central and northern portions, choosing a side is not optional. You must choose. So, if you’re going to be in Florida during the week of Thanksgiving, be ready to choose.
And a little vocabulary lesson:
Gator Hater: term used to refer to an FSU or Georgia Bulldog Fan.
Gator Bait: derogatory term used by a UF fan to refer to an FSU fan.
This concludes the G portion of the ABC Along.
There are plenty of Gator Haters in Tennessee, too. UT counts UF quite high on its rival list.
And here I had your “G” pegged as being Grace.
Just for the record – here it’s the Huskies (University of Washington) and the Cougars (Washington State). Their big blow out is the Apple Cup. For the record, you are rooting for the Cougars, even though they are on the eastern part of the state and you are on the western. Just saying. Did I mention that I’m a senior at WSU? btw – if you really want to see tulips and daffodils, head on down to Mt. Vernon – they grow them commercially and have a big tulip festival every year. And if you get up this way, let me know. We’re pretty close.
That’s excellent!
I grew up in Tallahassee. I too graduated from UF but remained a Seminole Fan. I’ve sat in the same seats at Doak since 1982 when I was but a wee Nole.
Someone should start a support group for those of us who had to tolerate the enemy.
