I have been doing a bit of research lately on shawl and stole
patterns. I’ve discovered that while Fiber Trends, etc has some great
patterns, I am truly amazed at the designs created by other
knitbloggers. I am amazed not only at the fiber artistry but in the
mathmatical genius that would be required to write out these original
works. I’m in awe.
It is from this state of stunned into silent amazement (OK, I’m
never silent. But you get the point!) that I decided to create a top
ten list. It’s just my list. You may know of patterns that I’m not
aware of, if so, please share in the comments.
Top Ten Shawl/Stole Patterns Designed by Knitbloggers
10. Cosmic Pluto Knits has
the Simple Yet Effective shawl pattern. The name says it all but it
doesn’t do justice to beauty of this design. The pattern instructions
are contained within the post.
9. Mountain Peaks Shawl is just one of many beautiful shawl patterns by Miriam of MimKnits
. I really like this one because it is truly unique not only in it’s
design but also in being able to picture exactly what inspired her.
The pattern for the shawl is available in the store section.
8. Sue’s Chevron Shawl is a pattern that I can’t stop admiring. The simplicity it the key to it’s beauty. The pattern is available on her sidebar.
7. Kiri Shawl: I recently stumbled onto a blog called All Tangled Up
. While there I saw the pattern for this beautiful shawl which was
inspired by the Birch shawl. I just had to include it in the list. I
don’t know the name of the blog’s author but I can see that she is
quite talented.
6. The Yarn Harlot’s
Snowdrop Shawl. The pattern for this shawl, which was designed by
Stephanie, is located on her sidebar. I love the traditional look of
the shawl combined with the repeating pattern. It is quite pretty.
5. Barbara’s Shawl was designed by Jeanie
for a friend of hers. There are a couple of different photos on her
site of the shawl. Her posts state that she will share the chart for
the shawl if you’ll just send her an email.
4. Print O’ the Wave Stole designed by Eunny.
One of the commenters on Eunny’s blog called this stole "insanely
beautiful". I think that says it all. The pattern is on her sidebar.
3. Moon Dance Stole. Melanie of Pink Lemon Twist created this pretty design. The repeating pattern kinda reminds me of moonlight reflecting on water. Very pretty.
2. Gerda by Kendra of I Dream of the Sea is a lovely stole that has a vintage lace appearance. There is a link to this lovely free pattern on her sidebar.
This last one is a bit different. It is still a shawl but there is no pattern available at this time. However, it is stunning and a "must see".
1. Inspired by the shell of an actual sea urchin, Urchin Shawl took many months to complete. I kept awaiting each new post with an update of Sue’s
progress. When she did finish, she gave me a heart attack by posting
photos of her dropping the finished object (that already looked quite
beautiful) into a hot dye bath. It came out unscathed but I think I
aged 10 years just reading that post.
So there it is, my list of great shawl designs found in Knitville.
:blushing: Thanks! There will be a pattern for Urchin released; it’s actually written, I just need to get a better picture…
Sorry I worried you about the dye! I was pretty nervous myself.
Thanks for this list – there are a few new-to-me patterns here that I can’t wait to check out!
I just wanted to let you know that the designer of Kiri is called Polly and she is a very nice person not to mention a stupendous knitter. You should leave her a comment!
What perfect timing! I somehow came home from Madrona with enough lace/fingering weight for three or four projects. About 1.3 kilometers of wool was specially purchased for Mountain Peaks, but I didn’t yet know what to do with the rest. I am having fun looking at your suggestions.
Print o’ the Wave is gorgeous, but size 00 needles? yikes!
Another great list Kris, you’re such a good organizer!! Polly is knitting the FPS with us!! And I agree with meg, she’s a lovely person and a wicked good knitter! Plus she’s a sock fiend, a woman of my own heart!
What no pics of Madrona spoils?
BTW, I loved the thriller dance
thank you so much for making this list! awesome, all of them.
Thanks so much for the link and the lovely words! Mountain Peaks has a special place in my heart. 😀
Thanks so much for your list. There were some there that I hadn’t seen before- just beautiful!
Thanks for linking to my pattern. I’ve just had a look at your FO gallery. You’ve made some really beautiful things! I especially like your lace leaf stole.
Oh, goody another list from you! REally I get a lot out of these! Plus lately that is the way my mind is working…you know, 3M sticky lists in my purse with all the small things I need not forget! I’m coming back with a cup of coffee to really digest this list!
