Here is the sweater that was supposed to be finished by December 29th but I don’t want to talk about it Leo.  See the sleeves.  I knit him a medium even though he wears a large shirt.  When I was doing the sleeves I came to a point where it said that once I had finished all the increases I was to knit until the thing measured a certain length.  When I finished the increases the sleeves were already much longer than that length.  I should’ve bailed out and stopped but I was on a deadline so I proceeded.  Now look!!!!  Also, looking at the neck, I think even the medium is too big.  We’ll see.

Now I see why I kept running out of yarn.  I’m thinking I should undo the cast on edge and go back a bit from his wrists.  Then proceed downward decreasing as I go?????  What think?

Now you know why this thing has been sitting in a big fat pile of alpaca.  I’ve been avoiding looking at it and facing the truth.

  1. I would cut the sleeves and either pick up sitiches and knit down to the cuff with a tubular or sewn bind off or cut, remove excess inches and graft the cuff back to the now fixed sleeve.

The body of the sweater doesn’t look too big but the neck it a bit open…I’d pick up stitches around the neck and go for more of a crew, low funnel.

  2. I don’t suppose Dana would consent to an arm stretcher, would he? I think I would just cut and pick up stitches and knit new cuffs. It’s hard to see from the picture, but the arms don’t look too wide so maybe no decreasing would be necessary. The neck is wide, but not unreasonably so. I agree with Debi that you could pick up some around the neck and knit up a little.

  3. I like the “cut the sleeves off” option. I’ve seen this done to lengthen or shorten the body of a sweater as well. If you just tried to undo the cast on, it would involve a lot of picking out stitches. The neck is more difficult. Does the body fit OK? You could undo the neck finishing and decrease some around the top. Or undo the sleeves from the body, and rip back the body a ways, redesign the top quarter or third to be a bit smaller. It would be far easier than ripping the whole thing, and make it wearable.

  4. way to go Dana… I appreciate your somber resolve and serious disposition through the photo shoot. awesome.

Too bad about the sweater. I like the ideas for shortening the sleeve but I see the neck as being the huge huge problem. It’s kind of a feminine cut….

    hummmm! Was this intentional?

    Nah… no, scrap that thought.

Well, now… there ya go. Shorten the sleeves to fit you, nab the sweater and knit Dana a new one.

    Yep… I think that’s the cure.

(sweaters are way too scary… you really need a support group to get threw them ok)
