I thought that sounded better than saying we failed on 67% of our attempts.
I, with great excitement and little planning, decided that Anna Grace and I would go letterboxing today. First we had to find a stamp…no luck. We took stickers. Then we needed a compass. Thankfully Doc Brown was able to lend us his super special compass imbeded in a fingerless glove.
And with these minimal preparations and some printed out clues, we were off on our adventure. I thought that by doing letterboxing we could get back to the days when we used to go hiking…sorta. And we did hike. We were walking all over the place. We just were finding much.
First we went to Downtown Winter Garden where there’s an antique train car in the middle of town. You can tour the train car during certain hours of the day and there’s a letterbox there somewhere. I don’t know where because I never found it.

Anna Grace all ready for her first letterboxing adventure
Once I decided that there was no way I was going to find the very-easy-to-locate letterbox by the train, we moved on and headed over to the lake. Lake Apopka was beautiful today, it was so clear you could easily see Clermont, Apopka and pick out various landmarks.

For this letterbox we were going to need a little sense of direction. So, Anna Grace got out Doc Brown’s handy dandy compass mitt and we were off.

We searched and searched, Anna Grace began to complain and I cut bait. We then headed to the Winter Garden library which was the starting point for our next adventure. We followed the clues but I have to say that I was not very hopeful. Plus, by this time, I was hot, Anna Grace was complaining, I stunk to high heaven and we were both very tired. But then….
We found it. Letterboxing 101.
Success! Finally!!!!
One letterbox found. Success rate….33%
I don’t know about Anna Grace, but finding this one letterbox got me pretty excited. I might be hooked.
I’ll be calling you for details. My crew would love this!
OK, you got me…what in the heck is letterboxing???? I am a Detroit kid here, and I have never heard of the term! ‘Splain, please.
