We have been waiting to receive our new insurance information. We wanted to see if we could decrease some coverage and save a little more money on our Cobra. Well….that’s not going to work out in the way that we had hoped.
Dana’s delightful former employer changed their coverage so that…
- The insurance provider has been changed to a company that is notorious…and not in a good way!
- There are no longer any options: everyone takes this one plan or takes no plan
- That new plan now costs more than the old plan so our Cobra fees just went up
- Our deductible has been increased by an additional $1500.00 thus increasing our expenses.
We did, however, meet the goal of decreasing some of our coverage. It’s just that we’re now paying MORE for decreasing our coverage.
As you can imagine, none of this is helping me along in the “must walk in forgiveness” portion of my life. Just sayin’!!!!!!
Unbelievable!!! Ok with Dana being out of work, can he apply for benefits thru DCF?? AG should be able to be covered, maybe??
Um, here’s a question…because we had to deal with this COBRA thing (they call it COBRA for a reason, it’s like a poisonous snake trying to suck away your soul), but how much are your current medical costs on a month to month basis anyway? It’s a little risky, but it might be cheaper to just spend out of pocket when there’s a checkup or whatever from month to month than paying out all that money. Now, of course there’s the risk if suddenly somebody has an accident or needs sudden hospitalization, but consider the odds. We went without insurance or COBRA for the 1st 18 months of my son’s life, and that’s with all those newborn visits, shots, additional ill visits, etc. and we still came out ahead, even when he had some serious illnesses (fortunately no hospital visits). What’s cheaper, a $200 bill for a checkup with shots, or $1500 that you pay out and never used? It’s something to think about…
I cannot remember when Dana lost his job, but Mike was telling me that something changed with COBRA as of March. It is part of Obama’s stimulus package. From what I understand your fees for COBRA should decrease by 65% if I am not mistaken. The employer can either reimburse you for the months already paid or apply it to future payments. Mike had to send letters out to everyone they let go a few months ago. You may want to check into it.
I heard the same thing…I checked it out and I will be getting a package to fill out this week. Have Dana check with his previous company’s benefits dept. They can give him a number to call!!!
