I am a huge football fan. College football, not NFL. I’m not too into pro-ball at all. That said I do usually watch some portion of the superbowl each year. This year the Seattle Seahawks are in the game and so I figured, since we just moved here, I ought to watch the game, etc. In watching the coverage, etc, there is an inside joke that Dana and I aren’t privy to and cant’ seem to figure out.
What is the "controversial 12th man"? What does this mean?
The 12th man refers to the fans. Since there are 11 men on the field, the Sehawks retired jersey #12 and assigned it to the fans. The controversy comes because Texas A&M University now says it has the rights to the term “12th man” and issued a restraining order against the Seahawks forbidding them to use it. The Seahawks got around that by taking the case to federal court. So, for now they can use it, but there is a lawsuit in the works. So there you have it in a nutshell.
Hey Kris,
I was all set to answer this for ya…with my super-crazed football fanatic husband on the right side telling me what to type…but I see Dorthy has already done a wonderful job at ‘splaining.
