Knitting Groups: Tacoma

I have been meaning to do this for a while.  I intended there to be a photograph but, oh well.

Weekly I get hits for "Knitting Groups Tacoma" and "Knitting Guilds Tacoma".  Whoever this person is that keeps searching (to no avail), they seem to always search on Mondays and Tuesdays. Don’t know why, but that’s just what happens.  Anyway, a few weeks back I decided I would write a post with all the info for the little knitting group that I attend.  I don’t think we are officially a guild, I think we’re a group.  But I’m new…. how should I know?

Anyway..

If you want to join up with a little group of knitters here’s the info.

We meet at the Old Town Starbucks on N. 30th street.  Here’s a map.  We meet on Wednesdays.  EXCEPTION…. the first Wednesday of the month we meet at the library. It’s the Anna Lemon Wheelock Library on north 26th street.  Here’s some more info.

OK  so… remember… first Wednesday is at the library, all other Wednesdays are at Starbucks.

Next… what time?  6:30 to 7 ish.  Some folks just come whenever they can get there (I’m one of those folks).  If we’re at the library they promptly kick us out at 8:00.  (or is it 8:30?) Starbucks however lets us linger until 9 or 9:30.  They sweep and vacuum around us.  They are very, very accomadating.  This cannot be said for the libarians.  They don’t knit and it shows!

The group is small.  There are some folks that you won’t meet or see unless you go to the libary night.  The size of the group at Starbucks changes all the time, it just depends on who has what going on.  Usually there are three or four of us at Starbucks.

What do we do?  We knit.  We drink coffee.  I eat cupcakes when the Starbucks Fairies smile upon me and have them in stock.  We don’t have presentations and that kind of thing.  We knit.  We talk.  We gossip.  We cackle.  We knit.  We consume large amounts of calories and caffeine (except on libary night.  Again… those librarians can be real buzzkills!).

So, come and join us whoever you are that keeps searching.  Email me if you want to know anything else (although I don’t think I know anything else).

Toodles!

  1. Have you given up on the Antique Sandwich Shop altogether? Ruston Way and Pearl… just up the street from Pt. Defiance.

This actually is a guild, but more like a knitting group. Actually knitting and spinning. It’s carpeted which I find really nice for spinning, as my wheel doesn’t tend to walk away from me… also for listening… the gossip/talking isn’t contending with the coffemaker, employee and customer noise and piped in music echoing off of the tile floors. This is my favorite group. 3rd Wednesday of every month. This ‘guild’ will be demonstrating at the Puyallup Fair on Wednesday… whatever week the fair is.

There is also a small group of mixed level knitters who meet the first Wednesday of every month at the Forza’s (I think that’s right…) coffee shop in the Westgate shopping center at 21st and Pearl. I need another spinner to show up so I don’t stand out so much. Very nice group.

There is MoonSpinners in Auburn (?)… the only guild that meets in the evening… it’s a very large and formal group with Robert’s Rules and all.. interesting group and inspiring items/projects and very talented artists… I think they meet on 2nd Tuesday. They do have a posting somewhere that gives details and directions.

Oh, and let’s don’t forget the ‘Fun with Fiber Day’ at the Black Berry Patch Farm the weekend of Columbus Day. Great fun, all day fiber play with various fibers and colors and techniques… spinning, weaving, dyeing and shearing… Fee is usually $10… well spent. Very casual, potluck affair.

If you’re truly interested in fiber events in the area you will want to drive down to Canby Oregon for OFFF… Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival. Third weekend in September… magnificent. (Fri, Sat and Sun) I go and camp out ALL weekend right there at the fair grounds and still don’t get to see everything.

  2. Greetings to all the knitters in Tacoma. I am getting the word out that I have put together the first Pacific Northwest Knitters Cruise, sailing roundtrip from Seattle Oct 1 to 5, 2007. We will visit Nanaimo (great alpaca farm there) and Victoria BC, and the a day at sea. We have 3 great instructors to teach 6 hours of classes on our day at sea, which will be included in the cruise rate. I am president of the Eastside Knitters Guild (Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland area), and own my own travel agency. If you want more information please drop me an email. Sonja@foothills-travel.com. happy knitting, sonja :)

  3. It’s autumn, rainy…time to start knitting again. Are you still meeting on Wed. eves (starbucks/library rotation)? Maybe I’ll just have to venture out and find out for myself! Glad to have stumbled across this site! Cheers, Kate

  4. Here it is August 2010 and I finally find this site. Are you still here? Do you still meet? I might even be able to get to the Westgate Forza’s. I’m desperate to find a group I can belong to that isn’t too far away and isn’t at night. I’m coming on a mobility scooter so getting to Westgate is still an hour’s “commute”.
